Mr. Demetrios Kehagias
Mr. Demetrios Kehagias was born in Queens, NY. He
is a graduate from Long Island University College of Pharmacy class of 2003.
Demetrios began studying Byzantine Music
at the
young age of 14 under the tutelage of Archon Protopsaltis
(head-chanter) of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of
America, Mr. Nicholaos Steliaros. Being one of his top students both in theory and
praxis, Demetrios quickly advanced in his studies and at the age of
20 passed his examinations and obtained the
(ptixio)Certificate of Byzantine Music
from the
National Conservatory of Athens with
the perfect grade of
arista(perfect). He was appointed Protopsaltis in St.
Demetrios Cathedral in Astoria, NY for 10
years.
In 2009, Demetrios passed his examinations
and obtained
the Diploma(advanced degree) in Byzantine Music
from the
National Conservatory of Athens, with
the grade distinction of
arista(perfect) as well. Demetrios is fluent in
western music having studied jazz and composition at Long Island University in
Brooklyn, NY. He presently serves as the Protopsaltis at the
Kimisis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church,
Brooklyn, NY. He presently serves as the Director of the
Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir.
Mr. Antonios Kehagias
At age 15, Antonios started to formally
learn Byzantine Music from Archon Protopsaltis of the Archdiocese of North and South
America (currently the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of
America), Mr. Nicholaos Steliaros. While learning under Mr. Steliaros, he
attend St. Demetrios and St. Catherine Parochial Greek Orthodox
Church School in Astoria, NY and participated in the Byzantine music choir
supervised by Mr. Gerasimos Vasilopoulos and Mr. Demetrios Kehagias. He also
participated in various concerts that were organized in the
Hellenic Cultural Center of the Archdiocese, in Atlanta,
Georgia, in
the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy
Trinity in Manhattan, and various churches throughout the
Tristate area.
At the age of 23, (2005), Antonios
passed examinations and obtained the
(ptixio)Certificate of Byzantine Music with
the grade of arista
(perfect), from the National Conservatory of Athens.
That same year, he was given the position of first chanter at
SS. Constantine and Helen church in Jackson Heights, NY.
At the age of 28, (2009), he passed
examinations and obtained the
Diplomain Byzantine Music from the
National Conservatory of Athens, with
the grade distinction of
arista(perfect) as well. He has been chanting all in
all for over 13 years and recently was hired as the protopsaltis (first chanter)
in St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church in
Astoria, NY.
