"Τα έθιμα της Τσικνοπέμπτης - The Greek custom of "Sizzling/Smoking Thursday" is performed during the Greek Carnival or Apokries (literraly: "no-meat season" or "meat free season"), just before the Sunday of Apokries, and a few days before the begining of the Lent. It originated by the Byzantine Greeks in the Middle Ages, but it has its roots in the ancient Greek customs that took place in this season, so it is orginally a very ancient custom. It's called "Smoking Thursday", because the Greek Orthodox Christians celebrate the begining of the Lent, by eating sizzling charcoal grilled meats and drinking wine while dancing and singing.
